The painting was created in Guler (present-day Himachal Pradesh, India) during the eighteenth century. It later entered the collection of Percival Chater Manuk and Gertrude Mary Coles, before being bequeathed to the British Museum through the Art Fund in 1948, where it remains today.

The painting also seems one dimensional and constricted and limited to its dimensions but it provides the audience and immersive experience of diving into the lives and activites of the various women during the hours of festivities.
