Laylá and Majnun Fall in Love at School

The artist behind this artwork is Dharam Das, a renowned artist in the Mughal imperial workshop under emperor Akbar. He is well known for his exquisite work on the miniature paintings of the era depicting courtly scenes such as depictions of rulers, luxurious courts, processions, etc. with remarkable detail rendered in vibrant colours. This artwork titled ‘Laylá and Majnun Fall in Love at School’ depicts the moment in when Laylá and Majnun, leads of the popular Persian tragic romance first encounter each another at school and fall deeply in love. Dharmdas has depicted the scene with vibrant hues reminiscent of the delightful atmosphere of their first encounter. In the background, lush green trees and buildings are depicted. Inside, the two protagonists are shown among their peers and teacher. The composition is rather crowded which shows the busy school environment. Layla and Majnu are both depicted in the centre, adorned in pink and green garments respectively. This depiction is aimed at hinting at attention towards their developing relationship. The richly decorated carpet in blue, detailed tiled surfaces, domed architecture and the flowering trees in the background along with the depiction of all the figures in the composition are reflective of the grace and characteristics of Mughal miniature painting. On the upper section of the composition, an inscription can be seen, which is a common occurrence in Mughal artwork and is indicative of the integration of literary narrative with visual storytelling. A factor to be noticed is the contrast between the other students, some of whom are fighting, and the emotional intimacy of the protagonists which reinforces the theme of love depicted in an otherwise ordinary social setting. Layla and Majnun can be swiftly distinguished from other figures through their proximity and gestures in the lively environment. If seen symbolically, the enclosed school is depicted here a setting for a love that transcends social boundaries and conventional expectations. The detailed landscape and architecture also work to portray the scene as a poetic world. Overall, this artwork can be interpreted as a synthesis of literary narration, romantic love and architectural splendour which depicts the beginning of Layla and Majnun’s tragic love story.
