Ghulam Ali Khan, a prominent 19th-century Mughal artist celebrated for his meticulous Company Style architectural paintings has wonderfully depicted the royal Jharokha of the Diwan-i-Am. He has created a visual composition that uses symmetrical cusped arches and delicate tonal washes to draw the eye directly into the central sanctuary, highlighting the harmony between the overarching red stone framing and the luminescent white marble centerpiece. It has a distinctive “Bengali Chala styled” curved roof canopy. The featured structure is in the Dewan-e-Am, a grand hall of public audience measuring 196 feet by 64 feet, whose red sandstone pillars supporting flat arches were later disfigured by modern white plaster, while its once-tapestried arcades gradually fell into neglect and utilitarian misuse. At the core of the hall stands a massive, handsomely carved marble throne with a rear gilt doorway where the Emperor entered to hold the daily Jharokha Darshan, separated from courtiers by a gold-plated railing and surrounding silver railings.
One can observe from the artwork that below the throne rests a marble dais inlaid with semi-precious stones, which served as the designated platform where the chief minister (wazir) collected public petitions. Behind the canopy, the wall is embellished with vibrant pietra dura stone inlays representing flora and fauna which was carved by the Florentine jeweler Austin de Bordeaux although much of the original mosaic was stripped during periods of decline. Later in 17th-century travelers François Bernier and Jean-Baptiste Tavernier recorded the throne’s dazzling splendor during Aurangzeb's reign, the hall required substantial later restoration under Lord Curzon, with Florentine artist Mennegatti repairing the intricate stone inlay of the throne alcove to preserve its historic legacy.
