The version of The Grand Canal, Venice held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Beaune (inventory number 12.1.7) remained in Félix Ziem's personal studio until his death in 1911. Upon his passing, it passed to his widow, Madame Vve Félix Ziem. In 1912, just one year after the artist's death, Madame Ziem donated the painting to the city of Beaune as a direct gift. The work has remained in the museum's permanent collection ever since. The Beaune museum holds a special connection to Ziem because he was born in the city in 1821, making this donation a homecoming of sorts.
