One of the finest landscape painters of the 19th century, Felix Ziem belonged to the Barbizon school. Ziem is particularly known for the illustration of scenes from Constantinople and Venice. “The Grand Canal in Venice” and the “View of Istanbul” are examples of some of his most celebrated paintings. However, his paintings also include the depiction of landscapes from a number of other locations, indicating how extensively he travelled. Scenes from Egypt, Martigues, Cagnes-sur-Mer all found expression in his paintings. It is crucial to note that he also produced some of the finest Orientalist works. The exploration of the Orientalist theme makes his works all the more interesting, adding a taste for the exotic.
