Ludovico Carracci’s Annunciation presents the sacred event as a quiet and intimate encounter rather than a dramatic spectacle. The simple domestic interior, subdued colours, clear perspective, and familiar objects make the biblical event appear close to the everyday life of the viewer. Mary’s reading, Gabriel’s kneeling posture, and the restrained gestures emphasise humility, devotion, and acceptance. The view of Bologna through the window further connects the sacred event with the contemporary world. By returning to the clarity and simplicity associated with earlier Renaissance art, Carracci makes the religious message easily understandable while encouraging personal meditation. Overall, the painting transforms an ordinary domestic space into a place of divine revelation, reflecting the devotional ideals of the Counter-Reformation.
