An Italian early-Baroque painter, etcher, and printmaker Ludovico Carracci was born on 1555 in Bologna, Italy. He studied painting under Prospero Fontana and travelled to Florence, Mantua, Parma, and Venice. His art used dramatic lighting and broad brushstrokes to create deep spiritual feelings. He also helped in reviving Italian painting, especially frescoes at a time when art had become too stiff and formal. In 1585, he and his cousins founded the Academia degli Incamminati. The biggest innovation of this academy was to teach students to study nature and real life directly through drawing, which made it the most important foundation of their training.
