The painting was in the collection of the artist, Benedetto Luti by summer 1714. By 1719 the painting was part of the Schonborn collection. The painting now hangs at Schloss Weißenstein, Germany.
A woman artist whose own life’s battle were stroked on her paintings. This article encapsulates the story of the fearless, determined and independent artist, Artemisia Gentileschi. An Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia was the daughter of Orazio Gentileschi, himself a painter who since childhood trained Artemisia and recognized her natural skills in art.
Artemisia is considered among the most accomplished 17th century artists, who initially worked in the style of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. She later became prominent for being able to depict the female figure with naturalism.
A feminist painter of her times, Gentileschi’s paintings mainly feature women from Bible, myths and allegories. Her work often includes women as protagonist of the work, equal to men.
One of her famous works includes ‘Susanna and the Elders’, a 1610 painting considered her earliest known and signed work. The painting beautifully captures a scene from the Chapter 13 of the Book of Daniel. As we can see the work captures a Hebrew woman, known as the virtuous wife of Joachim taking a bath at her husband’s property which is meant to be secure. However, she is intimidated by two ‘Elders’ who were spying on her and demand from her to have conjugal relations. Upon refusing, these men threaten to ruin her reputation by lying about her affair with a young man. The painting particularly captures the malevolent persona of the two men and an attempt by Susanna to decline their diabolical advances. The twisted body of the female lead hints towards her discomfort rather than receptive to the idea proposed by the Elders.
Gentileschi, in her works earlier did not integrate many natural elements, this is proved by the slight presence of the sky in this painting and not much has been included in regards to the surrounding of the location. The two Elders are shown separated from Susanna with the stone enclosure, hinting towards the idea of evil versus good, a typical theme in Biblical events. This particular work of Artemisia has been subject of many debates and discussions, as the artist in her personal life faced a similar trial after being raped by her own tutor. Susanna eventually receives justice, on contrary Artemisia unfortunately did not.
This painting depicts a story from the Bible about the beautiful Susanna. She is a young and beautiful woman who is bathing or relaxing in the garden. At this time, she is approached by two elders - important and influential men in society, who are secretly watching her. They want to harm her or get their own way and try to influence her. However, Susanna rejects their proposals and does not succumb to their pressure. This scene is filled with feelings of shame, courage and injustice, and shows the struggle for honesty and integrity in the face of the unrighteous demands of the elders.
