Although rarely exhibited now a days, Mikhail Guermacheff, born in Kharkov, Russia, was known as one of the best Russian painters. Initially he studied at The School of Fine Art Moscow and St. petersburg Salons. Guermacheff along with several artists were dependent on the commissions, exhibitions and purchases by the Royal families and the Orthodox church. With the success of the Bolshevik revolution, these practitioners became threatened as the new belief surrounding art was nowhere close to the older one. The revolutionists believed that primarily art should be functional and contribute towards social concerns. The artists associated with the imperial order had to thus leave Russia and among them was Guermacheff who then settled in Paris. While at paris, he exhibited at The Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, and the Grand Palais des Champs Elysee. At this time, Guermacheff was exposed to impressionism and historians agree that a subtle stylistic change can be observed in his painting as a result of this. Guermacheff's relocation to Paris was in 1920s but the present painting dates to 1910 and therefore predates this experience. However, the senstivie treatment of natural light and atmospheric effects, exhibit certain impressionistic qualities. These elements reveal an interest in capturing the transient effects of light without departing from the compositional discipline and realism of the Russian landscape tradition. In "Winter Sunset", we see a stream flowing between snowcovered fields with dry leaves strewn around and bare trees spanning the scene. Towards the right, stretching till the background there are deciduous trees standing tall. In the foreground, the stream reflects the trees, while the sunlight imbues the space with a gentle golden glow. The harmonious arrangement of the composition evokes nostalgia and invites quiet contemplation.
