"And what will they tell their descendants, what can these dozens and hundreds of canvases by Konchalovsky say? They say: in the 1930s, a peaceful, blissful and satisfying lazy life went on around the artist..." These were the words of a critic who analyzed the works of Pyotr Konchalovsky, praising his skill and diligence in crafting an escape from reality through his paintings. However, they were still grounded in reality and in showing the lives of the common people. This painting is one such instance of Konchalovsky's visit to Veliky Novgorod where he spent his summers. His expertise lies in capturing the story of a group of men sitting round a table through Realism while adding stylization in the form of Post-impressionism. Ultimately, his wish to show the lives of people in the pre-war years of Russia does not go unfulfilled. The colour palette is warm like the atmosphere in the painting. The men are having a cheerful discussion, and they are possibly inebriated which can be inferred by the many bottles of alcohol and the half-full glasses on the table. The reds of the mens' clothes and the curtains as well in the painting in the background are highlighted by the blues and whites of the china in the cupboard. Overall, the thick brushstrokes and geometric forms, show how the post-impressionists managed to blend the complexity of realism with impressionist style techniques while avoiding the themes of naturalism.
