Portrait of Pandit Seu

Artist:Nainsukh
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India.
Location History:The painting has long been preserved in the collection of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh. Following the Partition of India, many important Pahari paintings from the former Lahore Museum collections were redistributed to museums in India, and the Chandigarh museum became one of the country's principal repositories of Pahari miniature paintings.

Nainsukh’s Portrait of Pandit Seu (c. 1735–1740) is a pivotal masterpiece that marks a dramatic shift in 18th-century Indian miniature painting, turning away from rigid courtly idealization in favor of tender, psychological realism. By choosing to depict his father and teacher rather than a monarch or deity, Nainsukh captures Pandit Seu with quiet dignity and profound restraint relying on delicate modeling, precise textures, and a muted color palette to highlight the sitter's calm presence. Beyond its technical refinement and gentle intimacy, the portrait carries immense historical weight, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the patriarch of a iconic artistic lineage whose innovations fundamentally transformed the Guler and Pahari schools.
