The Doni Tondo is a remarkable Tempera painting on wood by the world-renowned artist - Michelangelo Buonarroti, commonly known as Michelangelo. Regarded as one of the key figures for driving the high renaissance period, Michelangelo was known for his outstanding designs, powerful imagery, and consummate skills at drawing, painting, sculpture, and even architecture. Though born in Florence, Michelangelo was mostly active in Rome for the most part of his artistic career. Commissioned by Agnolo Doni, a Florentine merchant, this piece in particular demonstrates Michelangelo's prowess at composition, image-making, and painting. The circular canvas is occupied by the triangular design of the holy family set against a garden. In the scene, we see Saint Joseph gently passing baby Christ to Mary. The eyes of all the figures are trained on each other, enhancing the intimacy and immersive-ness of this moment. Their clothes with elaborate folds, their dynamic body language, and their foreshortened bodies are painted as such to balance the circular picture-frame. In the background we are presented with the sight of nude figures present on the other side of the wall of this holy garden. The overall color palette of this painting is bright and saturated. Michelangelo, in this piece does not use stark contrast of lights and shadow, a decision probably taken to enhance the unity of the scene. This remarkable painting is a living proof of the great maestro's artistic prowess and intentional story-telling.
