Muhammad Yusuf's single-figure youth portraits including the "Youth Seated by a Willow "sit squarely in the stylistic tradition passed down from his teacher Reza Abbasi and shared with his frequent collaborator Muhammad Qasim. A young man elegantly dressed is shown sitting underneath a willow tree. The youth is draped in sophisticated garments featuring a lavishly detailed sash and a turban threaded with gold, which collectively signal high social standing and refined courtly elegance. Scholars note that during the reign of Shah 'Abbas I (1587–1629) and his successors a major shift occurred in Persian art wealthy urban elites and courtiers began collecting individual polychrome paintings rather than solely investing in multi-figure manuscript illustrations. These pieces were later compiled into royal or private albums called muraqqa. while other scholars identify this era as the beginning of Farangi-Sāzi style where european elements of subtle texture more naturalistic figural representations were shown. However, even when moving toward naturalism Safavid artists generally maintained an aesthetic "oscillation" between the real and the ideal ensuring their work remained rooted in Persian artistic traditions.
