Doge Leonardo Loredan

This masterpiece by Giovanni Bellini is an oil painting on wood panel. This scene almost seems like a modern-day photograph due to the smooth and soft blending of oil paints. The blue background contrasting with the orange dogal cap and the white robes, brings the Doge's face in focus. This background was painted with ultramarine blue and white. Expensive for its time, Bellini very smartly used the economic situation of the sixteenth century to portray the extravagance of royal life. The white robe with gold and silver weavings further mark the luxury and wealth of the Doge.
