The Battle Preceding the Capture of the Fort at Bundi was painted by Tulsi Kalan, also known as Tulsi the Elder, around 1590–95. The painting shows the battle that took place before the Mughal army captured Bundi Fort in Rajasthan in 1577. The artwork was made using opaque watercolor and gold on paper. It is part of the Akbarnama also known as the Book of Akbar which was commissioned by Emperor Akbar to record the events of his reign. The artwork presents a busy battle scene with warriors, horses, weapons and armor. The soldiers are shown taking part in the fight, creating a sense of movement and activity throughout the composition. A camel is also included among the military details. In the background, a walled city can be seen, representing the fort and the place where the battle took place. The different figures, animals and other details help bring the historical event to life. The Akbarnama was illustrated by several artists from Akbar's royal workshop and is considered an important record of Mughal history. Through this artwork, Tulsi Kalan presents an important military event through detailed figures and a lively battle scene. It also gives an idea of how paintings were used during the Mughal period to record historical events and preserve the stories of the empire.
