Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors and his work was a precursor to Impressionism. He primarily painted marine scenes and was nicked the ‘King of the Skies’ in his expert observation of light and atmosphere. His subjects focused on modern life and contemporary places, such as ports, coasts, and skies. Brussels Harbour has been captured in its youth, before its later industrial expansion, in an almost still environment reflecting tranquil maritime scenes. Boudin has depicted a moment before transformation due to rapid social change. Interestingly, human figures are absent from the painting which shifts the viewer’s attention to the light and structure rather than narrative action. Here the landscape is the subject, not just a backdrop. The harbour has become a study of perception and space. Boudin’s predominantly grey and muted earth tone palette creates a quiet and contemplative mood. The colours are used structurally, emphasising the overcast sky which reflects in the still water. He has achieved a balance between order and fluidity within the still image. Boudin has recorded a scene of modern life faithfully, prioritising atmosphere over narrative and has removed dramatic action in order for the viewer to focus on the true subject of the painting: the light, the weather, and the mood of the landscape.

The receding lines drawn by the masts of the ships guide the viewers along the channel, creating a sense of depth. With an overcast sky taking up most of the space in the painting, Boudin captures a calm and quiet view of the Brussels harbour.
