Nineteenth-century France witnessed the emergence of one of the finest landscape painters of the time, Eugene Louis Boudin. Boudin was particularly known for the depiction of marine landscapes in his paintings and was a forerunner of Impressionism. He became known almost exclusively for beach and harbor scenes along the Normandy coast, prized for his treatment of sky and light. One beautiful example is his masterpiece, “On the Beach, Sunset,” which very intricately captures Boudin’s skill at painting coastal scenes. It is indeed crucial to note that Boudin’s paintings went on to have a great influence on the works of well-known artists like Claude Monet.
