“A Muharram scene” is a work by the esteemed Company era painter, Sewak Ram, one of the most prominent and influential painters of the Patna school of painting.
In this work, we see the depiction of a scene from the Mourning of Muharram, which falls as the first month in the Islamic Lunar Calendar. The Mourning of Muharram has been an important religious activity for those of the Shi’a faith, as it commemorates the martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali (grandson of the Prophet Mohammad) who was killed in the historic Battle of Karbala, and thus is an important time for self reflection on Hussain’s selfless sacrifice for justice. In this painting, we see bamboo and paper models, which represent the tombs of Hasan and Hosein, being carried aloft. The majority of the members taking part in the procession are dressed in white, and seem to be carrying swords of some sort. Some are seen wearing green. We also see some, especially women and children, sitting on the side and watching as the procession occurs. The work itself is exceptionally well made, with the soft linework and colouring reflecting the delicate and sombre nature of this procession. There is a staggering amount of detail, with numerous figures all wrapped up in their own work.
Sewak Ram was a prominent Colonial painter. In the given painting, a realistic painting of the Muharram procession is shown. The procession is lead by men cladded in white. They seem to be carrying swords. We can see women and children sitting on the sidelines watching the queue.
