Sewak Ram

Sewak Ram (c. 1770 to c. 1830) was a painter of the Company school who came from Murshidabad to Patna and whose work defined the stylistic elements of what is now called the Patna school of painting. Working from a bazaar shop that served British residents and officials he produced sets of watercolours recording the trades and costumes and festivals of Patna and its surroundings and later large crowded scenes of Muharram and Durga puja and the great fair at Sonepur. His kajli siyahi method of painting straight with the brush without a pencil outline became a hallmark of Patna painting. Little is known of his life but his works survive in major collections.
