Introduction

Origin:
The name “Kachhi Ghodi” is derived from the words “Kaccha” (meaning “wooden”) and “Ghodi” (meaning horse), a direct reference to the wooden horse props used in the dance. This style of art of Kachhi Ghodi came from Shekhawati, the north west region of the Indian state of Rajasthan ( including the districts of Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Churu). At other times, traders and merchants, in the olden days, travelled long distances and so were subject to attacks by bandits.
The Kachhi Ghodi dance is supposed to derive its inspiration from tales of Bhanwariya bandits, who would steal from the wealthy, like Robin Hood, and redistribute the spoils to the needy. The tale is part of the performance of dance, where phony sword fights and courtesy deeds are represented.

The characteristic of the dance form is its dress that is very elaborate with a horse that is wrapped around the dancer’s waist, which is composed of paper maché and therefore that of a mare. The dress is adorned with beads and glass material, thereby depicting the luxury of Rajasthani dresses.
