Introduction

Rajasthan, a land of rich history, culture, and sacrifices, is also home to various folklores and songs that showcase and throw a good amount of light on the valor and strength of the warriors and the rich tapestry of the heroic bards and songs of the rulers who had ruled this land of warriors.

Originating in the Shekhawati region, the dance form has spread beyond its geographical source to become synonymous with Rajasthani pride of culture. Rajasthan Kachhi Ghodi is danced by male dancers on dummy horses. Men wear elaborate costumes with exquisite mirror work and mount the dummy horses. The dummy horses that act as the props are also embellished with meticulous embroidery and mirror work.

The dancers wearing swords ride the dummy horses. The sword dancers dance in response to flutes and drums. In this performance, a vocalist narrates the tales of Bavarian bandits of the Shekhawati region.

Origin:

The name “Kachhi Ghodi” is derived from the words “Kaccha” (meaning “wooden”) and “Ghodi” (meaning horse), a direct reference to the wooden horse props used in the dance. This style of art of Kachhi Ghodi came from Shekhawati, the north west region of the Indian state of Rajasthan ( including the districts of Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Churu). At other times, traders and merchants, in the olden days, travelled long distances and so were subject to attacks by bandits.

The Kachhi Ghodi dance is supposed to derive its inspiration from tales of Bhanwariya bandits, who would steal from the wealthy, like Robin Hood, and redistribute the spoils to the needy. The tale is part of the performance of dance, where phony sword fights and courtesy deeds are represented.

Costumes and Themes:

The characteristic of the dance form is its dress that is very elaborate with a horse that is wrapped around the dancer’s waist, which is composed of paper maché and therefore that of a mare. The dress is adorned with beads and glass material, thereby depicting the luxury of Rajasthani dresses.

The dancer, dressed in a traditional outfit—typically a kurta, dhoti, and turban—holds the dummy horse and sword in the hand. The dance is complemented by classical Rajasthani music, which includes drums and soft sounds of flute. Singer narrates the bandits’ stories, giving dance a layer of legend. Dance involves sharp steps, pretend sword fights, and fast footwork, all delivered against rhythmic beats with music.

The Kachhi Ghodi dance is renowned for its elaborate patterns and grandeur, which represent the richness in cultural legacy and tradition of Rajasthan. These patterns not only exist as part of costumes but also have a strong symbolism and legacy of the tradition and folklore of the region.

1. Mirror Work (Sheesh): Another major characteristic of costumes is mirror work, which is referred to locally as ‘Sheesh.’ Small, circular mirrors are embedded in fabric, creating shiny effects that flash the light. This ornamentation is not just for beauty purposes; it is thought that it washes away evil eyes and provides good luck to the wearer.

2. Geometric design: Geometric designs, including diamonds, squares, and triangles, are typically present on costumes. These designs are also set in symmetric patterns, which reflect harmony and equilibrium. Thus the showcasing of the designs throws light on the patience and skilled expertise of the artisan.

3. Faunal and Floral Motifs: Floral motifs and fauna-inspired motifs such as flowers, leaves, and animals are common to embroidery. They are derived from the flora and fauna of the natural landscape of Rajasthan and represent fertility, wealth, and interrelationship.

4. Sequins and Beadwork: Aside from the labor of the mirror, sequins and beads complicate the fabric, creating texture and depth in the design.

These decorations reflect light and enhance the visual interest of the costumes throughout the performance.

5. Regional variations: There is a style of embroidery and motifs in every region of Rajasthan. The Kachhi mare dance having originated in the Shekhawati region, there are broad and colorful designs in this region. Techniques and motifs in embroidery can be different, illustrating different cultural effects in the state.
