The miniature we are observing represents an intimate scene of the night in the courtyard of a palace, most probably a zenana (women’s quarters). In the centre is a figure lying on a raised bed, wrapped in a bright orange cloth and propped against a large bolster. Some female attendants and companions stand about the bed in silence, some tending tenderly to the recumbent form, others sitting on a patterned pink carpet reading from manuscripts or resting in contemplation. The background is a richly detailed multi-tiered architecture with golden domes, decorative pavilions and geometric screens against a dark starry night, establishing a somber and poetic nocturnal mood typical of late Mughal or regional Indian courtly art.
