1803 fire of Bombay

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Delhi Art Gallery

This painting depicts the efforts of twentieth-century Indian artists to document and archive historical trauma. The 1803 Fire of Bombay ,was a pivotal moment in modern history of India that forced the British colonial rulers to dismantle the congested native settlements inside the Fort walls, and initiate modern urban segregation this laying the groundwork for Bombay's transformation into today's Mumbai metropolitan and the financial capital of India. The painting itsself reflects Rahiman’s own deep-seated isolation and the precarity of his career. Despite his extraordinary talent, his refusal to engage with commercial art markets, combined with his reliance on a single royal patron, kept him isolated from the mainstream art of that time. The contrasting visuals between the glowing, destructive fire and the dark smoke encompassing the area mirrors the emotional tension of an artist caught between the strict discipline of academic training and the chaotic reality of personal misfortune.By superimposing the image of a burning industrial mill onto the historical narrative of the 1803 fire, Rahiman comments directly on the contemporary industrial landscape of 1912 which brought rapid growth of textile mills in Bombay along with urban congestion, labor exploitation, and frequent industrial accidents. Thus the burning mill painting has becomes a potent metaphor showing hazardous effects of the rapid colonial industrialization .This oil painting has become a rare and invaluable window into Rahiman's genius in which he captures a moment of the history when the artist looked away from his serene landscapes to confront the dark and volatile realities of the modern world.
