For many years, the artwork was part of the private art collection of the prominent art collector and philanthropist Mariano Bellver in Seville. Following the donation of his collection to the city, the painting was permanently relocated in 2018 to the newly opened Casa Fabiola museum in Seville, which serves as the permanent home of the Colección Mariano Bellver.
Un día de juerga en Málaga (also known as “A Day of Revelry in Málaga”) is a well-known masterpiece by the famous Valencian and Andalusian genre painter Bernardo Ferrándiz y Badenes (1835–1885). The painting depicts a scene of festive leisure, in the sunny, seaside setting of 19th-century Málaga. In the foreground, Ferrándiz presents a vibrant ensemble of lower- and middle-class revelers, gathered outside of a typical Andalusian tavern (venta) for song, dance, and wine tasting. The painting is divided into 3 sections: the “revelers”, “spatial dynamic”, and “atmospheric setting.”
The revelers are the dancers and central characters, as they are all dressed in traditional regional costumes: men in short jackets, marselleses and wide-brimmed hats, sombreros cordobeses, and women in colorful shawls and dresses. In spatial dynamics, Ferrándiz places several story threads in the composition of his painting on the canvas: musicians playing guitars, couples dancing a festive verdiales or flamenco step, and seated individuals holding glasses of local Málaga wine. Furthermore, in the atmospheric setting, the background unfolds a clear Mediterranean sky, surrounded by rustic white-washed walls, terracotta tiles and sunny vegetation, alluding to a warm Andalusian climate.
Ferrándiz y Badenes studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos, Valencia, as well as at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, before departing for Paris and Rome. He was appointed as a Professor of Fine Arts in Málaga and eventually became the director of the School of Fine Arts in Málaga, and as such, he became the foundation of the 19th-century Málaga School of Painting (Escuela Malagueña), which profoundly influenced young Pablo Picasso's early teachers.
Un día de juerga en Málaga is a display of Ferrándiz's genius in his academic draughtsmanship and a free, witty approach to light and color. The painting is not a fantasy, or a false fantasy, as it gives an authentic, socially observant view of popular culture in the region, and not an idealized nor an artificial one; it celebrates regional identity through naturalism, narrative humor, and light.
The painting showcases a vibrant social class which is more grounded and different than the pleasures of elite class. It shows a vibrant side of society in that culture as it is vivid in its imagery as well as the use of colors in done in a very playful manner.
