Tobias and the Angel

Filippino Lippi was a gifted Florentine Renaissance painter. He worked in both early and high Renaissance periods. Much of his paintings were commissioned by the Catholic Church. True to the nature of Italian Renaissance artworks, he turned to Classical themes often commissioned by wealthy patrons. In his paintings, we find the combination of linear perspectives, realistic depiction of physical features, Chiaroscuro and Sfumato styles. Lippi's paintings were dynamic yet balanced. From the onset, his paintings were marked by warm tones and are thus also seen in his celebrated "Tobias and the Angel". Lippi has done major projects on fresco styles and has also applied creative freedom in his paintings. Filippino had made multiple works in metal points. In the composition - "Tobias and the Angel", we can see a winged angel leading a young man forward. They form the primary subjects of the painting. The painter has used warm tones for his subjects and we see that both of them have pale skin and blond curly locks. They are wearing loose robes and the movement seems to signify the fact that they are walking. The angel's light blue robes gather around his mid region and fall to his feet. Specks of gold are in his neckline and hems matching his golden halo. The young man is wearing pink robes and is seemingly looking up at the angel. The painting depicts a biblical event of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael. Tobias is sent by his blind father to collect a debt. The angel disguised as a human advises and guides him to the river Tigris. He asks Tobias to catch a fish and use its gall to make a remedy to cure his father's blindness.
