Baburao Painter, born Baburao Krishnarao Mestry in Kolhapur was a self-taught artist who worked as a painter, sculptor, photographer and filmmaker. He learned skills from his father, who was a craftsman and later became an important painter of theatre backdrops. He also established the Maharashtra Film Company. Became a pioneer of Indian cinema. Baburao Painter’s painting ‘To the Temple’ shows an Indian woman carrying water. The simplicity of the subject gives the painting its strength. The woman is walking toward the viewer holding a metal vessel on her shoulder and a smaller vessel in her hand. Her posture is. Her expression is gentle making the scene feel natural rather than staged. The white sari she wears stands out against the landscape drawing immediate attention to her figure. In the background a river, trees and open countryside create a rural setting. The painting is realistic in how it treats the figure, clothes and objects. The artist uses light. Shade carefully, especially on the folds of the sari and the surfaces of the metal vessels. The composition reflects his interest in observation, perspective and theatrical effects. This woman can be seen not as a water carrier but also, as a symbol of everyday rural life and the often-unnoticed work that women do.
At first glance, I assumed it was a black and white photograph and not a painting. The mastery of the artist in depicting the various shades and light in greyscale is incredible. The woman's coy expression has been captured in such amazing detail and with complexity.
