Youth by a flowering tree

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: Chester Beatty library, Dublin

This artwork by the renowned Mughal artist Farrukh Beg depicts a young man standing beside flowering trees, holding a striped sash in his hand. He seems to be gazing towards the right. The artwork is rendered in ink, colours and gold on paper. Farrukh Beg was a Persian artist who contributed greatly to Mughal art. This artwork is part of the Minto Album, which consists of a collection of illustrated folios that belonged originally to imperial Mughal albums. The young man's appearance and the delicate natural elements in the background are depicted in much detail, reflecting the refinement of Mughal miniature painting. An inscription by Emperor Jahangir identifies the work as being Farrukh Beg's creation in his seventieth year, which dates it to approximately 1615 CE. The painting demonstrates the Mughal interest in representation of people, natural observation and sophisticated artistic techniques that gained prominence during Emperor Jahangir’s reign. The artwork depicts a harmonious relationship between the man and his natural surroundings. The colours used in the artwork bring out the fine details and create a cohesive depiction of all the elements. The identity of the man and the meaning of the scene have not been established. The artwork may have been made just to be appreciated as a refined study of a youthful figure. His serene gaze and poised stance add a sense of quiet dignity. The inscription by Jahangir is significant because it reveals how the emperor was personally engaged with art. Thus, the work represents the aesthetic sophistication of Mughal miniature paintings and also the importance of collecting, patronage and artistic recognition in the imperial court.
