He attended the Academy of Florence in 1852 for his studies in art. In 1855, he started to visit the Caffe Michelangiolo in Florence where he met other artists like Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Saverio Altamura and soon became the member of Macchiaioli movement. He was primarily given the term 'Mcchiajuolo' in a derogratory sense by newspapers.
