The Virgin in Prayer

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The National Gallery London,UK

Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato after his hometown, spent most of his life working in Rome. He specialized in devotional art, and his painting The Virgin in Prayer (created around 1640–1650) is one of many similar versions he and his studio made of the Virgin Mary. Currently housed in London's National Gallery, the artwork was designed to encourage personal, private prayer. Sassoferrato kept the painting simple to avoid distractions, using a dark background and just three main colors: red, white, and a highly expensive ultramarine blue made from lapis lazuli, which showed Mary's immense importance. Though the canvas is small, Mary is painted close up and nearly life-size to create a powerful, real presence. Her elegant clothing and smooth features reveal the clear artistic influence of earlier masters like Raphael and Perugino. The painting entered the gallery in 1846 during a revival of the artist's popularity.
