The Triumph of Marius

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This artwork a part of a ten-work portfolio depicting scenes from Roman history, painted for the Ca’ Dolfin in Venice which catapulted Tiepolo to success. The 10 works were made between 1725 and 1729; Tiepolo depicted a story of ancient Roman military victories based on historical accounts. The people are shown in the composition in a vertical format. The banner at the top reads "The people of Rome behold Jugurtha, laden with chains." These 10 artworks must have served as a means of glorifying ancient conquests.
