| Location History: | A Walk in the Garden belonged to the critic Diego Martelli, and it may be the work Lega showed at the 1870 Parma exhibition as La passeggiata, though that identification is only a scholar's hypothesis. After Martelli's death in 1896, his Macchiaioli collection passed to the City of Florence and became the core of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna at Palazzo Pitti. The painting is still there, catalogued as Cat. Generale 178, and it was restored in 2008-09. I found no provenance for the years between 1870 and 1896. |
In the painting by Silvestro Lega titled A Walk in the Garden, there is a domestic scene taking place in an elaborate garden. The figures can be seen walking in a well-crafted outdoor setting that is full of trees, foliage, and natural light. Instead of showing a scene of dramatic action, the artist chose to show a regular and peaceful moment. As far as the painting itself goes, the garden becomes one of its major elements.First of all, the presence of vegetation allows us to have a natural frame for the figures.Secondly, the path leads the viewer into the picture.Warm natural colors and light-dark contrast are used to show the warmth of the Italian landscape. Figures are merged with the environment in order to emphasize the connection between man and nature. It should be noted that this painting represents the style of the artist's close connection with the Macchiaioli – a group of nineteenth century painters from Italy that rejected academic traditions and studied the effects of light and colour using patches called macchie. The garden is therefore not merely a background but becomes an essential part of the painting’s mood. In general, the painting A Walk in the Garden shows the calmness of ordinary life. The artist creates a serene atmosphere in the picture with the help of the natural environment and the use of lighting in it.
