Tiepolo painted The Triumph of Marius in 1729, when he was barely thirty and already Venice’s most ambitious artist. It’s part of a ten-canvas cycle for the Ca’ Dolfin, a Venetian palace, and it’s massive, nearly eighteen feet tall. The painting includes the main character which is Roman general Marius parading the North African ruler Jugurtha through Rome in chains after defeating him in 104 B.C.
The peculiar characteristic of the painting is related to Tiepolo’s approach and how he manages the emotional registers. Rather than showing Marius’s triumph, the viewers are instead drawn to Jugurtha. There’s a strange dignity maintained in the captive’s bearing and a haughty resistance despite his chains. His companions appear genuinely grieved. The painting refuses to give the obvious power fantasy. Instead, it complicates things. Compositionally, Tiepolo organized the scene around an arc. The boy with the tambourine sits in the foreground. Jugurtha anchors the middle ground. Marius sits elevated on a hill, silhouetted against a distant arch. The yellow standard fluttering above him holds the whole arrangement together. Nothing feels accidental. The spears create vertical lines. The figures move with real weight and momentum. This isn’t the frantic energy of his earlier work.
The painting also works as flattery for the Dolfin family. They saw themselves as spiritual descendants of Rome’s conquerors, and Tiepolo knew this. But the cycle as a whole treats Roman history more as pageant than propaganda. The costumes in the painting are related to sixteenth-century Venetian, not archaeological reconstructions. The setting’s more Gothic than classical. Tiepolo wasn’t interested in historical accuracy. He rather chose theater and grandeur and the complex feelings that come with power and defeat.
