Attributed to Sahibdin, this artwork is believed to be an Illustration of the poem Rasikapriya written by the popular court poet Acharya Keshavdas (1555–1617). Sahibdin was presumably commissioned by the royal court of Maharana Jagat Singh I, to make this illustration around 1630 to 1635, making it one of his earlier works.
As an artist, Sahibdin was known to be very literal in his approach. Often making his illustrations match the exact wording on the page. His illustrations followed the art style of the Mewar school of art along with a particular style of Mughal miniature painting developed under Akbar's reign. As seen in the artwork, Sahibdin's art style is rather poetic in nature, the storyline is often panelled and showcases detailed and expressive human figures.
The above artwork is made of two horizontal panels. The first depicts Krishna and Radha meeting and conversing in a forest. Another figure, potentially a gopi, watches the two from behind the tree. The dense forest around the figures creates a sense of seclusion and romance. A quiet and elusive place for the lovers to exchange their words. While in contrast, the second panel is more dynamic, wherein Krishna and Radha indulge in a dance while the Gopis play traditional instruments and hold up torches, and a sense of celebration and festivity takes over the page.
