The School of Athens

Artist:Raphael
Support Type: Wall / Plaster
Paint Type: Fresco
Current Location: Stanza della Segnatura, Musei Vaticani

School of Athens is no portrait gallery of old sage but a portrait of eternal humanism's search for truth in inquiry, dialectic and rational. Plato is leading, pointing to the sky, whilst Aristotle gesturing to the ground, thereby indicating idealistic and empirical approach in parallel. Among them are the astronomers, the scientists and the men of letters, conversing all of them on learning and research. In the background the harmonious architecture with ancient orders shows the blend of art and civilised world during the time. The painting shows me not the one-man show, it means it shows the collaborative knowledge creation in our human society with different points. Also, putting pagans in this building in the Vatican shows faith and logic don’t necessarily oppose to each other. Rather it suggests knowledge is shared heritage.
