As demonstrated by X-ray analyses, Caravaggio’s provisional underpaintings reveal a laboriously rejected multi-figural scheme, which he ultimately abandoned to pursue a radical strategy of pictorial violation. Rather than presenting Matthew as a heroic, integrated subject whose body organizes spatial coherence, the final overpainting scatters the saint’s limbs through extreme foreshortening, occluding his torso and lower legs in a complex tangle of figures. While Irving Lavin has explored how Caravaggio’s commissions in the chapel navigated the profound thematic tension between raw naturalism and sacred tradition, here this negotiation is manifested as a violent disruption of anatomical wholeness. By substituting an active, expressive anatomical display with a fragmented, abject body partially veiled in crumpled red silk, Caravaggio elides the human figure into a series of disconnected still lifes, transforming the saintly body into a passive, pitiful relic that celebrates physical disintegration and devotional vulnerability.
This literal dissolution of the body is conceptually anchored in a site-specific, sacramental topography that reframes the scene of execution as a liturgical rite of conversion. The deep, elliptical void in the foreground is not a mere decorative recess, but a baptismal pool or cavity modeled on early Christian baptisteries and contemporary handbooks of Roman and Ambrosian ritual. Under this reading, the semi-naked male figures huddled in the lower registers are not Mannerist repoussoir "ignudi," but adult neophytes or catechumens awaiting baptism "per immersionem." By setting the execution adjacent to a baptismal cavity, Caravaggio unites physical death with spiritual rebirth. As Matthew’s blood flows toward the tomb-like pool, it mirrors Counter-Reformation theology, which conceptualized martyrdom as a “second baptism” by blood. This sacramental reading is reinforced by the liturgical specificities of Matthew’s vestments. Wearing a late-sixteenth-century black chasuble, the saint is cast as a contemporary priest celebrating a funerary mass, thereby bridging historical hagiography with the daily memorial services of the Contarelli Chapel.
This liturgical framework is further complicated by a profound disruption of temporal and narrative unity. Caravaggio deliberately subverts Alberti’s demand for visual clarity, utilizing visual obscurity to challenge the viewer’s immediate perception. Rather than capturing a straightforward, frozen moment of execution, the painting’s centrifugal composition and gestural syntax demand a complex chronological reconstruction. The central nude figure, traditionally identified as the royal assassin, can be reassessed through his nudity as belonging to the group of catechumens. He acts as an “avenger” ("vendicatore"), seizing the sword in horror as he witnesses the priest’s demise. Conversely, the true assassins are the four armed, fashionably dressed youths fleeing in the background, including Caravaggio’s own self-portrait, who withdraw from the scene of the crime. By staging the aftermath of the blow rather than the initial strike, Caravaggio forces the viewer to look past the deceptive, spectacular surface of the primary composition to discover an enigmatic divine truth through close attention to hidden details.
