Greuze’s The Lazy Boy reflects his interest in genre painting and moral instruction. The artwork depicts a young boy in a relaxed, possibly idle posture, emphasizing the theme of laziness and the importance of diligence. Greuze uses soft lighting, warm tonalities, and expressive facial features to create an intimate and emotionally engaging scene. The boy’s pose and expression communicate a sense of indifference or unwillingness to work.
