Mushfiq spent his career almost entirely outside the imperial workshops. He never painted for Akbar or Jahangir directly instead he worked under ʿAbd-ur-Rahim Khan-i-Khanan, the Mughal general, poet, and one of the era's great bibliophiles, serving as both a court painter and a personal attendant in his household.
Because the Khan-i-Khanan spent long stretches of his career on campaign and administrative duty in the Deccan, Mushfiq's painting carries traces of that environment. It's Mughal in its grounding but not purely so the figures in his composition tend to be more elongated and elegant than in imperial court painting, the color runs warmer and more saturated, and architectural and landscape details lean toward Persianate and Deccani conventions rather than the cooler naturalism of Akbar's or Jahangir's studios.
This folio comes from the Hasht Bihisht section of that Khamsa and illustrates the climax of a story told by the princess of the Rose-colored Pavilion: a prince falls for a portrait of a king's mistress, wins her over with help from his companions, and pulls off an elaborate deception for seven nights running, the king is served by his own mistress in disguise, without recognizing her. Believing he's simply acquiring new women for his harem, he lets the group sail off, never realizing his favorite is among them. Mushfiq paints the moment right at the water's edge. The king stands under a parasol, watching the ship pull away with the woman he thought he was so carefully guarding. The figures are small and precisely rendered, the shoreline is drawn with a firm, deliberate line, and the surrounding landscape is unusually rich in color even by Mughal standards. It's a good example of what sub-imperial painting could do at its best — narrative discipline borrowed from the imperial ateliers, but rendered with a warmth and decorative intensity that marks it as coming from one of the most sophisticated non-royal patrons of the period.
Mushfiq’s folio from Amir Khusrau’s Hasht Bihisht represents a dramatic climax of love, clever deception, and courtly intrigue. By portraying the oblivious king watching the prince sail away with his disguised favorite mistress, the painting conveys a message about the limits of possessive authority, proving that wit and genuine affection can outsmart tyrannical control. Stylistically, its warm Deccani tones celebrate sub-imperial artistic freedom.
