The Infanta Maria Anne of Spain, future Queen of Hungary

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain

This portrait of the young Infanta María Ana reflects the formal conventions of Spanish Habsburg court painting, conventions Villandrando absorbed through the lineage of Sánchez Coello, Antonis Mor, and his master Pantoja de la Cruz. The rigid pose, sumptuous crimson saya, and meticulously rendered lace speak to dynastic authority rather than individual likeness. The 2011–2013 Prado restoration, which uncovered Villandrando's signed cartellino beneath the table, has since confirmed the attribution and situated the work among his final court commissions before Velázquez's arrival in 1623.
