The head of Saint John the Baptist

Domenichino Zampieri was an Italian Baroque painter. Thus, he was a trained painter who could master light and shadow, giving the figures dramatic effect. Domenichino was born into a family of shoemakers. He was actually nicknamed "Little Domenico" because of his small stature. In his whole career he was mostly seen as an obscure painter. However, he did have fresco works to his name. Domenichino's works were mostly inspired by Raphael and the Carracci. His paintings mostly revolved around the ideal sense of beauty that rose above the imperfections of nature. He basically painted forms of "classic- idealist" art which surpasses imperfections Thus he was heavily inspired by Renaissance art. "The head of Saint John the Baptist" is an iconic masterpiece about the aftermath of the prophet's execution ordered by King Herod. The subject is the severed head of Saint John the Baptist, a prophet who foretold the arrival of Jesus. His head is placed on a platter. Striking golden brown colours are used for his beard and hair. Matching to his luscious hair is the golden plate. A halo like circle surrounds his head. Bright red blood trickles down. The Saint's eyes are shut and his lips are greyish blue.
