One of the most celebrated Imago Pietatis images in the history of art, Bellini’s artwork constitutes a revolutionary reinterpretation of a recurring theme: this new devotional image breaks away from the conventions of the hieratic imago of the Byzantine tradition and reveals its human dimension, the drama of Christ’s death entering into an emotional relationship with the viewer. Through the arm and the bent hand, on which the marks of the Crucifixion are clearly visible and where the pictorial detail reveals human physicality, a point of passage between the divine and the human is established, symbolically represented by the marble parapet; rendered in their dramatic humanity and in an almost tangible dimension, the profile of Mary, the Mater Dolorosa, is placed beside that of Christ and supports Him with her body, while on the opposite side the Apostle John expresses all his anguish over the loss of his Master.
A further innovative aspect of Bellini’s painting is its chromatic range, which favours cool colours (revealed thanks to a recent restoration), breaking with the Byzantine and Venetian tradition of rich, enamel-like hues and, through subtle brushstrokes, offering the viewer an image in all its truthfulness: the minutely rendered details, illuminated with particular brilliance, such as the curled hair falling along the face of the Apostle John or the fine strands of Christ’s hair emerging from beneath the crown of thorns, are counterbalanced by the broad areas of colour in the garments, red, dark green, and blue, while a Renaissance landscape opening to the left provides the background to the composition.
Giovanni Bellini created a masterpiece of a painting, from the composition to the narrative of the painting, his way to create an emotional reaction from the viewer is incredible. The soft movements from Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, holding her child's body moments before his death is a strong image, portrayed with the right amount of emotional charge.
