Antoni Allegri da Correggio (1489-1534), or commonly known as Correggio, was a leading pioneer of the High Renaissance era and a graduate of the Parma School. His innovative techniques in the field of art greatly formed the Baroque and Rococo art forms. He initially received his training from francesco Bianchi Ferrari, but later embraced the styles of Leonardo da Vinci, Mantegna, Michaelangelo, and Raphael, while simultaneously developing his own identity. Correggio was famed for his masterful skills in chiaroscuro, soft sfumato, illusion, perspective, dramatic foreshortening, and compositions of emotions and movements. The famous dome frescoes painted by Correggio gave the ceilings a new identity— heavenly visions. The religious altarpiieces and mythological paintings were strikingly reflecting rich colour palette, sensuality, and naturalism. His revolutionary art style inspired the later generations, even if he onlyy had a few pupils under him.
“The Assumption of the Virgin” (1526 – 1530) by Correggio is a large fresco in the dome of the Parma Cathedral, which is considered one of the masterpieces of the Italian High Renaissance. In this painting, the viewer witnesses how the Virgin Mary is raised up to heaven and embraced by angels, clouds and the Apostles, as Christ comes down to meet her from above. Using the technique of ‘di sotto in su’ (from below), the artist succeeded in making the entire dome look like the sky and in creating the effect of flying figures that seem to move beyond the boundaries of the architectural space because of illusionistic perspective and dramatic foreshortening. The viewer sees the fresco gradually opening before his eyes and focusing on the scene step by step, from the Apostles to the ascending Virgin and further to Christ himself. This painting also emphasizes the key Catholic beliefs such as the Assumption of Mary, the Eucharist and the idea of eternal salvation. It was a great inspiration for the painters of Baroque era such as Giovanni Lanfranco.
