Soldier on a Horse

Mikhail Larionov's "Soldier on a Horse" was completed in 1911 and exemplifies the movement known as Russian Neo-Primitivism. Larionov eschewed established academic Western styles to incorporate the indigenous folk styles of the artist’s homeland of Russia into his painting.The artwork "Soldier on a horse" demonstrates the artist Larionov's influence during his military service. The composition features a soldier on a cube-like, simplistic horse against a highly abstracted background. Larionov eliminated traditional perspective, modelling and precision of anatomy creating a more rough and naive way (uncutted) of representing artists who used Russian Luboks (popular woodblock prints), provincial signs and children’s drawings as inspirations for their work. Heavy use of bold lines creates a two-dimensional appearance to the composition, which results in loss of spatial depth in the artwork.The soldier and horse are simply rendered geometrically, suggesting ancient stone icons or folk toys instead of an actual military portrait. The colours used for the horse and soldier are primarily earthy shades of ochre, brown and olive green to show the everyday, commonplace aspects of camp life, contrasted with pops of bright colour. The paint is applied thickly and crudely, with many visible brush strokes, which are used to show the actual physical substance of the paint as opposed to creating an illusion of reality.
