Self-Portrait (by Cheol-yu)

Artist:Cheol-yu
Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Gansong Museum of Art, Seoul

Cheolyu's Self Portrait feels deeply personal because it presents the artist not simply as a Buddhist monk but as an individual conscious of his own identity. The simplicity of the composition, limited colours and controlled brushwork create a quiet and introspective atmosphere. Unlike elaborate religious paintings, this work draws attention entirely to the presence and personality of the artist. I understand this painting as a reflection of individuality and artistic identity during a period of change in Korea. What interests me most is that Cheolyu chose to represent himself, suggesting that he saw his role as an artist as something worthy of recognition. The restrained style makes the portrait feel sincere rather than grand. Overall, the painting gives me a sense of calmness, dignity and self awareness while showing how traditional religious art could gradually become more personal and individualistic.
