Juan de Villalobos is painter who was active during the late 17th and early 18th century. He is one of the painters who is lesser documented and spoken of compared to contemporaries such as Cristobal de Villalpando and Juan Correa. He produced religious iconological images for churches and ecclesiastical institutions and historical records place him among the painters that contributed in the Baroque tradition of colonial Mexico (New Spain). No extant records state the date of the artwork San Illdefonso and its location is also not known currently as it has travelled across multiple private collections. He wrote a Treatise in Defense of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. As a reward for his piety, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and presented him with a white robe as a sign of her favor. The painting was created in 1657. Located in the Church of Santiago in Alcala de Eneres, Spain.
