The painting "Retrato de caballero" by celebrated Spanish painter Pelegrín Clave made in 1851, during his time in Mexico as one of the directors of the recognized Academia de San Carlos, the first formal institution for artistic development and knowledge in the American continent. The following artwork, an oil on canvas is considered one of the best examples of the academic portrait development during the 19th century in Mexico, as the Clavé himself, coming from an European background started introducing after his studies in Barcelona and Rome. Although the subject of the painting is an unknown man, he is represented sitting with an elegant and firm posture, which helps the viewer to recognized his standing in society. The man is wearing a three-piece dark suit according to the bourgeoisie of the era, along with stripped dark brown pants and what it could be a pocket watch tied to his suit. In addition, the man can be seen sitting on an elegant red chair which is depicted up to knee-height. The expression of the man's face is secure and powerful, with a faint smile, his casual posture of his body and his facial expression are indicators that this portrait was intended for personal use, since at that time, this type of portrait was most highly prized by the upper classes of Mexican society. The intention to depict the characteristics prized by the Mexican elite reflects both the role of the portrait as a symbol of identity and the academic education promoted by the Academy of San Carlos.
