Born in Catalonia, Pelegrin Clave is a painter of the Romantic era, who became the head of the prestigious San Carlos Academy. Before arriving to Mexico City to serve time at the academy, Clave had settled in Rome after completing his education. Apart from showcasing his romantic lens, Clave was instrumental for the propagation of realism in Mexican art. He majorly specialised in portraiture that exhibited Mexico's intellectual elite but explored and produced some landscapes as well. Over the course of his career, Clave fostered an academic approach towards art practice while displaying distinctive romantic and realistic aesthetics in individual artworks respectively.
