This artwork, executed by Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavalier d'Arpino, a leading exponent of late Roman Mannerism, represents the Gospel episode of the rest on the flight into Egypt, a theme addressed several times by the artist: one may think of the variant preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (formerly in the Barberini collection) or the one housed in the Galleria Borghese. The painting presents some distinctive features: its execution on canvas and its large dimensions, which are relatively unusual in his production intended for private patrons, and the presence of the young Saint John the Baptist, who joins the Holy Family in the landscape, appearing as a playmate of the Christ Child. In perfect Mannerist style, the scene reflects a precious and sophisticated taste, with subjects characterized by formal elegance, chromatic brilliance, and technical virtuosity; particular attention is devoted to the natural landscape, distinguished by precious colours, in which the leaves of the trees, the water, and the sky evoke the vitality of creation: it is interesting to note that in no other work did the artist devote such ample space to the landscape, and the quality of the result explains the unrivalled dominance he achieved at the end of the sixteenth century.
