Giuseppe Cesari (1568–1640), better known as the Cavaliere d'Arpino, was an Italian painter and one of the leading representatives of Late Mannerism in Rome. He was particularly celebrated for historical, religious, mythological, and decorative painting, and became one of the most important artists working for the papal court during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His career connected the sophisticated elegance of Mannerism with the emerging classical tendencies of the early Baroque. Cesari received important commissions from several popes, especially Gregory XIII, Sixtus V, and Clement VIII, and his studio became particularly significant because Caravaggio worked there after arriving in Rome.
