Raja Dalip Singh of Guler Performing Puja is attributed to Pandit Seu, an important painter associated with the early Guler School of Pahari painting. The painting presents Raja Dalip Singh engaged in a quiet act of worship before a golden image of Balakrishna, or baby Krishna. His simple pale yellow jama, white dupatta, and red cap create a modest appearance, contrasting with the richly decorated golden objects surrounding the deity. The Raja holds prayer beads in an orange cloth bag and a small flower in his other hand, suggesting that he is about to make an offering. The numerous objects used for the puja, including bowls, a lota, bell, incense holder, conch shell, and trays of flowers, add detail while emphasising the importance of the ritual. The peaceful green setting, white cloth, mesh parapet, and beautifully painted tree create a calm and devotional atmosphere. Beyond the tree, the golden hill and blue sky with touches of red add depth to the composition. The painting is particularly significant for its naturalistic treatment of the Raja. His facial features, eyes, and slightly aged skin are carefully modelled, giving him a sense of individuality and realism. Through the combination of detailed ritual objects, natural surroundings, and realistic portraiture, the painting presents Raja Dalip Singh not only as a ruler but also as a devotee engaged in a personal act of faith.
The above painting presents a fine example of Kangra art during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century India. The style of clothing, the soft yet smooth colouring, the mix of the intricacy of Mughal paintings with the stylization of Rajput art is evidently visible, not only in the depiction of the subject but also the theme, and setting.
