The Dormition of the Theotokos by Theophanes the Greek is a Byzantine religious icon depicting the death of the Virgin Mary, an important event in Christian tradition. The composition presents Mary lying on a richly decorated bier, surrounded by apostles and religious figures who have gathered to mourn her passing. Christ stands directly behind her, holding a small, childlike figure representing her soul, symbolising her passage from earthly life to the divine realm. Above him, a red-winged angel appears against a dark, rounded mandorla, adding to the spiritual significance of the scene. The apostles are arranged closely around the bier, their gestures and inclined heads conveying grief and reverence. Two elderly bishops, identifiable by their elaborate vestments, stand among the gathered figures. The architectural structures on either side frame the central scene, while the small burning candle placed below the bier adds a sense of solemnity and ritual. The composition is organised around a strong vertical axis, directing attention towards Christ and the Virgin Mary. Theophanes employs a striking combination of deep greens, reds, ochres and gold, creating a powerful contrast against the aged golden background. Rather than pursuing naturalistic proportions or realistic spatial depth, the artist follows the conventions of Byzantine icon painting, where symbolic meaning takes precedence over physical representation. The elongated figures, simplified architectural forms and expressive faces contribute to the spiritual intensity of the work. Painted in 1392, this icon is preserved at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and forms the reverse side of the famous Our Lady of the Don icon. It reflects Theophanes' ability to communicate profound religious emotion through a carefully structured and symbolically rich composition.
