Pandit Seu
Legendary Artist
Pandit Seu (c. 1680–1740) was a pivotal master painter of northern India who established the most influential family atelier in the Pahari region. He was patronized by Raja Dalip Singh of the Guler State (reigned c. 1695–1741). Seu transformed the Himalayan miniature art by synthesizing the robust, local Basohli style with the refined naturalistic and soft modeling of contemporary Mughal painting. As the founding patriarch of the celebrated Seu-Manaku-Nainsukh family, he established a workshop in Guler that mentored his sons, Manaku and Nainsukh. He established thorough learning foundation in his pedagogy which directly enabled the centuries long tradition of extraordinary Pahari artistic output that reshaped courtly visual culture across the Punjab Hills.
